Panama: residency and permanent status in Latin America’s main hub

Panama is one of the few countries where resident status can be obtained in 1–3 months, and where five years of permanent residence opens the right to apply for naturalisation. The economy runs on the US dollar, taxation is territorial, and the Panama Canal makes the country the logistics and banking centre of the region.

For entrepreneurs, remote professionals and people living on passive income, Panama is a workable plan B: several programmes at different entry levels, no requirement to live in the country while holding residency, and no language exam to obtain status.

Who it suits

  • Entrepreneurs and investors who need fast status and access to dollar banking.
  • Remote employees and freelancers earning in hard currency.
  • Retirees and people with stable passive income.
  • Families building a fallback plan with a route to second citizenship.
  • Anyone who needs a base in a western time zone close to the US and Latin America.

Why Panama

  • Territorial taxation: income from sources outside Panama is not subject to Panamanian tax.
  • The US dollar is the currency of settlement and there are no exchange controls.
  • Several residency programmes with different entry thresholds.
  • One short trip to the country on most routes.
  • The right to apply for citizenship after five years of permanent residence.
  • One of the world’s broadest discount packages for resident retirees.

Residency programmes

1. Friendly Nations Visa

For nationals of more than fifty countries with friendly relations with Panama. The programme requires proof of an economic link with the country: an employment contract with a Panamanian company, your own Panamanian business, or an investment in real estate or a fixed bank deposit from USD 200,000. A two-year temporary status is granted first, followed by permanent residence.

Timeline: 3–6 months to approval.

2. Qualified Investor Visa

The fastest route: permanent residence is granted immediately, with no intermediate status. The qualifying investment is real estate from USD 300,000, a securities portfolio through a Panamanian broker from USD 500,000, or a five-year fixed deposit from USD 750,000. The investment must be maintained for at least five years.

Timeline: 30–60 days.

3. Pensionado (retiree) visa

For recipients of a lifetime pension from USD 1,000 per month, with a supplement for each dependant. It grants permanent status and access to Panama’s resident discount system: transport, healthcare, flights, utilities and entertainment.

Timeline: 3–6 months.

4. Short Stay Remote Worker visa

For employees and contractors of foreign companies with proven income from USD 36,000 per year. Issued for nine months with the option to extend. It does not lead to permanent residence, but it lets you live in the country lawfully and try it out before committing.

Timeline: 30–45 days.

5. Business Investor visa

An investment from USD 160,000 into a Panamanian company that creates jobs for Panamanian nationals. Suited to those planning genuine operations in the country.

Timeline: 4–6 months.

The route to citizenship

After five years of permanent residence you gain the right to apply for naturalisation. This requires basic Spanish, knowledge of Panamanian history and geography, and a demonstrated genuine connection with the country. The decision is discretionary rather than automatic – during the consultation we assess your profile and realistic timelines honestly.

How we work – stages

  1. Consultation: citizenship, source of income, family composition and goal – we select the programme.
  2. Roadmap: document list, timelines, budget and whether travel is required.
  3. Document preparation: collection, apostilles and sworn translation into Spanish.
  4. Power of attorney for a Panamanian attorney – most steps proceed without your presence.
  5. Filing with the National Migration Service (Servicio Nacional de Migración).
  6. Trip to Panama: biometrics, residence card, opening a bank account.
  7. Follow-up: renewals, transition to permanent residence, preparation for naturalisation.

Frequently asked questions

No. To maintain residency it is enough to visit the country at least once every two years. Physical residence requirements arise only at the naturalisation stage.

Usually one visit of 5–10 days: biometrics, residence card and banking. Some programmes may require a second short trip.

Not to obtain residency. Citizenship involves an exam in Spanish covering the language, Panamanian history and geography.

Panama applies a territorial principle, so income from sources outside the country is not subject to Panamanian tax. Your overall tax position, though, also depends on where you actually live and which country treats you as tax resident. This always needs individual analysis before you decide.

Yes. A spouse and children are included, and dependent parents qualify under some programmes. Each dependant carries additional fees and income requirements.

Usually during your visit, within one to three weeks if the document package is ready. Panamanian banks scrutinise source of funds closely, so we prepare that in advance.

Several routes have no investment threshold: employment with a Panamanian company under the Friendly Nations Visa, the remote worker visa, and the Pensionado visa. We match the route to your profile.
