Relocation to Switzerland: residency, business and tax residence

Switzerland is one of the world’s most predictable jurisdictions: over 200 years without war, stable law, a strong currency and a transparent tax system in which terms are agreed at cantonal level.

We work with four scenarios. They differ not in service level but in purpose: to live and work legally, to optimise tax on worldwide income, to operate from a Swiss jurisdiction without moving, or to give your children a Swiss education. During the consultation we identify your scenario, the right canton and the route to it.

Who it suits

  • Entrepreneurs and highly qualified professionals planning a move.
  • High-net-worth individuals with passive income – dividends, rent, royalties.
  • Owners of international businesses, fintech and crypto projects, family offices.
  • Families with children aged 6–18 looking at international schools and boarding schools.
  • Investors who need a neutral jurisdictional status.

Programmes

Scenario 1 – Work permit (Permit L / B)

For those who want to live and work legally in Switzerland, either through their own company or through employment. We guide the client from the corporate structure and employment contract through to the work permit, residence registration (Anmeldung) and a personal bank account. Permit L for non-EU passports is converted into Permit B and later into Permit C (permanent residence).

Timeline: around 6 months. Requirements: valid passport, employment contract or a business case for incorporation, proof of qualifications (diploma, CV, portfolio), financial standing, apostilled criminal record certificate and certified translations.

Scenario 2 – Globalist (lump-sum taxation)

A special tax status for wealthy foreign nationals who do not carry out gainful activity in Switzerland. Instead of tax on actual income, a fixed amount is negotiated individually with the canton. The service covers eligibility assessment, choice of canton, negotiations with the cantonal tax authority, the individual tax ruling, Permit B for the client and family, accounts with Swiss private banks, asset structuring and property search.

Timeline: 3–6 months. Conditions: no employment in Switzerland; the regime is not offered by every canton and is available only to non-Swiss nationals.

Scenario 3 – A Swiss company without relocation

You do not have to move. A GmbH (Sagl) or AG (SA) is a working international instrument: a registered address in the canton, a Swiss-resident fiduciary director, a corporate account, fiduciary accounting (Treuhand) and sector licences – SRO, FINMA, VQF – for fintech and crypto projects. Management and dividend flows are handled remotely.

Timeline: 4–8 weeks for the company and account; licensing from 3 months. Share capital (GmbH – CHF 20,000, AG – CHF 100,000) is paid separately.

Scenario 4 – Education in Switzerland

Selection of a school or boarding school (Le Rosey, LAS, TASIS and others), preparation of the portfolio and documents, support through entrance exams and interviews, a student residence permit, transfer and settling in, and a local guardian where required. Two options: the whole family relocates with residence permits for the parents, or the child studies and boards in Switzerland while the parents remain abroad.

Timeline: 2–4 months. Tuition is paid directly to the school.

How we work – stages

  1. Consultation: goal, citizenship, family composition, budget – we define the scenario and the canton.
  2. Roadmap: document list, timelines, payment schedule.
  3. Document preparation: apostilles, certified translations, proof of qualifications and source of funds.
  4. Corporate or tax track: incorporation, or negotiations with the canton and the tax ruling.
  5. Filing the permit application (L / B) and managing the case until decision.
  6. Arrival: residence registration, personal account, housing, school.
  7. Follow-up: permit renewal, first-year tax return, permits for family members.

Frequently asked questions

No. Switzerland is not an EU member but is part of the Schengen Area: the permit allows free travel within Schengen, while the right to live and work applies to Switzerland only.

Permit C (permanent residence) is normally available after 10 years of residence, and sooner for nationals of certain countries. Naturalisation follows after 10 years with integration and cantonal language requirements. Exact conditions depend on the canton and your nationality.

For the initial permit the requirements depend on the canton and permit type. For renewals, permanent residence and especially citizenship, language is mandatory – it is best to start early.

Yes, that is scenario 3. You will need a registered address in a canton and a Swiss-resident fiduciary director. We provide both.

It is a fixed tax amount agreed with the canton instead of taxation of actual income. It is available to foreign nationals who do not work in Switzerland, and it is not offered by every canton.

Usually one or two: notary, bank and residence registration. Part of the process is handled remotely under power of attorney.
